Design for disabled access and adaptations

Disabled Access, adaptations & the Disability Discrimination Act

Are you aware of the Disabled Access provisions contained within the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and more recently in the Equality Act 2010?

Disabled Access is now a legislative requirement for all organisations and companies providing a service or facility to the public. You should now put in place reasonable alterations to your property to accommodate the disabled.

Disabled Access Audits and alterations

Initially a Disabled Access Audit of your property or property portfolio should be undertaken to establish exactly what (if anything) you need to do. Our advice is comprehensive, accurate and importantly will be considered in the context of your business or service. Following the audit JS Building Consultancy is able to prepare design schemes and oversee alteration or adaptation works if necessary.

There are provisions in the Building Regulations for disabled access and the regulations cover domestic properties as well as organisations and companies providing a service or facility to the public.

Where it is necessary to carry out alterations to a domestic dwelling to accommodate a disabled person technical detailed drawings will be required for submission to the Local Authority for building regulation approval. JS Building Consultancy will work with other professionals, for instance the Occupational Therapist and is able to prepare design schemes, and submit the applications to the Local Authority on your behalf and oversee the necessary alteration works.
